MACHETE 101

Lethalilty, Survivability and Outcomes

Course Instructor: Robert Brooks

Course date and place: On request only (at clients location)

Course duration: 2/3 days (20hrs)

Introduction

The machete is a common tool in unconventional warfare, having seen a great deal of use in many African conflicts during the late 20th century. Due to the rise in domestic terrorism and the call for Jihadists to use 'lone wolf' tactics utitlising easily-available weapons, there is an increasing risk that Close Protection Operatives will, at some point, come into direct contact with a machete-wielding assailant. The potential for the machete, or any other long cutting blade, is considered to be extreme in terms of efficiency for even an untrained attacker to cause significant impact. This is particularly true of situations involving the general civilian population. This course will familiarise students with typical actions performed by an attacker armed with a machete and how to best approach such a situation, whether armed with a sidearm, a baton, an improvised weapon or unarmed. This is a no-nonsense approach to fighting with and against long blades which does not follow any prescribed approach found in what can only be described as 'sporting' martial arts.

SESSION 1: DATA

This session will be a power-point presentation covering recorded attacks, outcomes and research on the use of machete in combat, including survivability data sets.

SESSION 2: FAMILIARISATION

This session will introduce the machete as a weapon of combat, covering biomechanics, lines of attack and potential outcomes. Students will work with a training machete to gain an understanding of the movement dynamics of the weapon.

SESSION 3: CONTACT

This session will use experience gained in the previous session to build a tactical map of counteractive intentions where both participants are armed with a machete. Students will learn fundamental actions of offence, defence and emergency options.

SESSION 4: BATON VS MACHETE

This session will deal with defence using a baton against the machete-wielding attacker. Students will learn the importance of measure, timing, target incapacitation and survivability.

SESSION 5: UNARMED

This session will focus on unarmed survivability against a machete-wielding attacker. Students will cover both single-handed and two-handed assaults and the biomechanical principles of defence against each.

SESSION 6: RECAP AND FREE ASSAULTING

This session will revisit all previous sessions. Students will then put all training into an open attack environment.
